Meiss Lake
August 20-22

We are going to backpack to Meiss Lake!

One of the nicest hikes in the Carson Pass area is to Meiss Lake (8313'). This 10 acres, 6-foot deep alpine lake is located north of Carson Pass in the upper Truckee River basin (Meiss Meadows area). It is bordered on two sides by heavy timber and granite outcroppings. On the southeast side it is heavily wooded, while on the southwest it is bordered by a lush meadow. It is said to be one of the warmest lakes in the high Sierra Nevada. It is now home to Lahontan Trout. Not many people hike to Meiss Lake because you have to go about one-half mile cross country through the meadow on the west side of the lake to get to it. And, you cannot see the lake from the trail. So unless you know it is there and know how to get to it, you may never even think about hiking to this lake. How cool is that!

Driving Directions to Silver Lake East Campground; Highway 50 to Sly Park Road...turn left...go to then turn left on Silver Lake road...which turns into Iron Mountain road....which turns into Mormon Emigrant Trail....this will run into highway 88. Turn left onto 88....Drive to the north end of Silver Lake. The entrance is on the right.
Directions to Carson Pass....Leave the Silver Lake east campground...turn right onto 88 (east) and go until you get to the Carson Pass ranger station.

Don't forget to be prepared and wear the right footwear, bug juice and sunscreen!
