Winter Car Camping Checklist

Base Layer
Next-to-skin
Underwear and long johns
Light or mid-weight layer under heavyweight layer OK
Middle Layer
Insulating clothes
Fleece or wool tops and bottoms
Insulating jacket
Outer Layer
Waterproof/windproof/breathable shells
Some winter clothing may combine aspects of both mid- and outer layers
Waterproof/insulated recommended
Hiking boots (with gaiters) OK if treated with water repellant
Headgear (beanies and/or balaclava. Brimmed hat useful for sun protection)
Gloves/mittens plus liners
Gaiters
Goggles and/or glasses (UV blocking and/or polarized)
Socks plus liners
Sleeping Bags (Synthetic best but down OK if kept dry)
Typical range: -10 to +10
Need to layer 3-Season bags or warmer
Each layer adds 8 to 15 degrees of warmth or more
Bag layers/liners (
Outer
: wool, fleece, another bag;
Inner:
fleece or silk)
Pads (
Two:
closed cell on bottom, full length self inflating on top)
Waterproof matches or butane lighter
Fire starter (candle, etc.)
Tarp or Space Blanket

Compass & map of area
Mirror (for signaling, compass back)
Plastic whistle
Extra gloves
Candy bars
Pee bottle with leak proof lid be careful when using in shelter
Water bottles/camelback/platypus drink lots during the day
Headlamp and/or flashlight
Sunscreen & lip balm (SPF 30 or higher)
First Aid kit
Toiletries
Dry set of clothes for return home
Plastic bags to store clothing, wet vs. dry
Fanny pack to keep stuff during the day, e.g., water, snacks, etc.
Ensolite (closed cell foam) pad to sit on
Shovel
Snow saw
Snow shoes
Warm up socks by keeping them in the sleeping bag next to you
Remove layer if perspiring but put back on when taking a break
If using down bag, make sure it is the innermost when layering
Double walled bottle with hot water for warming bag, esp. feet
Pack gear in a duffel bag instead of backpack for winter car camping
All cooking gear and eating utensils will be supplied by the troop for this outing.
Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will be prepared by the troop adults.
